Dr. Mohamed A. Why I am running to be Chancellor for the University of Cambridge
I’ve announced my candidacy to become Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. I’m honoured to have received over four times the number of nominations required and am deeply grateful for the encouragement and support.
I count myself among the fortunate beneficiaries of this remarkable institution. My academic journey began at Cambridge where, as an undergraduate student, I received the foundation that enabled me to succeed in my career and make lasting friendships. Now, my professional path has brought me full circle, and I wish to give back to this remarkable institution.
In an interview with the Times, and on my campaign website, I’ve outlined my reasons for running, and what I pledge to do if I become Chancellor, including:
- Champion academic excellence, financial resilience, and academic freedom.
- Give back to the University that shaped me as an alumnus, donor, and President of Queens’ College.
- Offer leadership grounded in decades of experience across academia, business, civil society, and government.
- Serve actively and inclusively, engaging with the whole University community on campus, in ceremony, and from the sports sidelines.
My desire to be Chancellor is not about prestige or the ceremonial aspects of the post. It is about being an engaged and inclusive Chancellor who works closely with colleagues to help the University navigate a period of extraordinary uncertainty, preserve proud traditions, and benefit from transformational innovations.
